ANR Paradesi Movie Info

Starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Anjali Devi, S.V. Rangarao, (Sivaji) Ganesan, Janardhan, Pandari Bai, Vasantha, Suryakantham, Master Mohan

When Anjali Devi and Adinarayana Rao launched their maiden production, they had no idea they were also launching the career of an actor who would go on become an iconic figure in South Indian cinema. After breaking away from Aswini Pictures Mayalamari, the couple founded their own production company, Anjali Pictures and acquired the remake rights of the Hindi film, Raj Rani (1950) directed by Satish Nigam. They signed ANR for the lead role and L.V. Prasad to direct the movie in both Telugu and Tamil.

As they were looking for a young actor to play the second male lead, P.A. Perumal Mudaliar, a prominent producer-distributor in Tamil who financed Anjali Pictures, recommended a talented young stage actor – Villupuram Chinnaiahpillai Ganesan. The title of ‘Sivaji’ was conferred on this actor by the Dravidian movement leader, E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker, after he saw Ganesan enact the role of the Maratha warrior in a play, ‘Sivaji Kanda Hindu Samrajyam,’ penned by the later day Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C.N. Annadurai. Without any hesitation, Anjali Devi took ‘Sivaji’ Ganesan on the rolls. Thus the actor had his first screen test done for the Telugu-Tamil bilingual, Paradesi/Poongodhai. A. Vincent, the operative cameraman for cinematographer Kamal Ghosh, did the make-up test for Ganesan. At the same time Perumal’s National Pictures too started shooting for Parashakthi, written by M. Kaurnanidhi with Sivaji Ganesan in the lead. Perumal requested Anjali Devi that his movie be allowed to be released first. Anjali and Adinarayana Rao agreed to this and thus Parashakthi became Ganesan’s debut movie, though he had faced the camera for the first time for Paradesi.

L.V. Prasad did not make a copy of the Hindi original. Taking the central theme, he and dialogue and lyrics writer Malladi Venkata Krishna Sarma, brought in several changes to suit the nativity.

Lakshmi (Anjali Devi) is a flower vendor in a hilly village called Seethagiri. Chandram (ANR) is left in penury after his father’s death in an accident. Chandram’s friend Raghu (Janardhan) dies from a heart attack, but not before asking Chandram to take care of his wife Suseela (Pandari Bai) and young son Anand (Master Mohan). Chandram’s health deteriorates as he works overtime to support the dependents. The doctor advises him to take rest at a hill station. Chandram arrives in Seethagiri where he meets Lakshmi and marries her in a local temple. When Lakshmi reveals to her father Rangadu (SVR) that she has married a ‘paradesi’ (as tribals called city folks) and is pregnant he asks her to bring Chandram to him. But when she goes to the hotel where he stays, she finds that Chandram has already left the village. Unable to bear the insults from the villagers, Rangadu kills himself. Declared an outcaste, Lakshmi lives all alone and gives birth to a baby girl. Chandram, who had to leave for the city on an urgent call, returns to Seethagiri to take Lakshmi with him, but is told that she has died in a fire accident. Years later, a grown-up Anand (Ganesan) and Lakshmi’s daughter Tara (Vasantha) fall in love when Anand comes to Seethagiri. Lakshmi tries to wean away Tara from the ‘paradesi.’ There on the story takes a few twists before leading to an intriguing climax.

L.V. Prasad could extract the best from ANR and Anjali Devi, who effortlessly showcased the change in their roles as they turn from young to old.

Kamal Ghosh’s cinematography, especially the use of slow motion technique in the Sakunthala dance sequence, perhaps for the first time in a South Indian film, received rave reviews. V. Shantaram and his Raj Kamal Kalamandir obliged by lending the slow motion capturing camera equipment for the purpose. Vedantam Raghavaiah choreographed the dances and Adinarayana Rao composed the music. He relied mostly on the Hindi film tunes. Four art directors – T.V.S. Sarma, Vali, Thota Venkateswara Rao and veteran A.K. Sekhar created the sets.

But, unfortunately, both Paradesi and Poongodhai, failed at the box office. However, the movie is remembered as the launch pad for Sivaji Ganesan. Years later, Sivaji repaid his gratitude to Anjamma (as Anjali Devi is reverently referred to) by acting as Chatrapathi Sivaji in Anjali Pictures’ Bhaktha Thukaram without taking any remuneration and by footing all his bills himself. And later when Sivaji Ganesan needed, the costumes he had worn in the movie, for use in the Government of India commissioned documentary on Chathrapathi Sivaji, Anjali Devi promptly responded by sending him the costumes.

She gives a masterful performance in emotional scenes.  Sarada is amazing as the innocent rustic lady who gives her heart to the hero and innocently believes that he would marry her someday. She did a deglamorized performance during the illness stage as well.  Sr.NTR is fantastic as the hero who gets torn between his love and humanity. Punyavathi movie Info

Punyavathi story at a glance

Punyavathi is one unique film which doesn’t feature Sobhan Babu in his typical attire- with glamor, heroines and lot of commercial entertainment value. The film features stalwarts like Sr.NTR, SVR, Bhanumathi, Krishnakumari and Haranath instead. Nevertheless, the audience admired Sobhan Babu’s portrayal of a youngster with high admiration. When his character was deprived of parents affection, the audience empathized with him. They were in shock when he roamed as a drunkard. They were amazed when the character showed concern towards the poor. They applauded hard when his character united his family members and made the story a happy ending.  This is why Sobhan Babu earned a great name for his portrayal in Punyavathi.

Story Details:

Professor Krishna Rao (SVR) is a great educationist. During his youth, he loves a woman named Parvathi (Pandaribai) and gets married to her. The couple has a son Prakash (Sr.NTR) and due to some dire circumstances their family gets separated. After sincere search for his lost wife and son, Krishna Rao marries another woman Padmavathi (Bhanumathi) eventually. This couple has two children Sekhar (Sobhan Babu) and Chitra( Jyothi Lakshmi). Along with these kids, Krishna Rao adopts friend’s daughter Shanthi( Krishnakumari). Padmavathi is an irresponsible woman who neglects family life and goes around clubs and parties. To make things worse, she makes Chitra accustomed to this lifestyle. As a result, Chitra falls for a wrong man Ramesh (Haranath), gets pregnant and commits suicide when she gets cheated.  Sekhar gets shattered with his sister’s unfortunate demise and becomes a heavy drunkard in the rice mill he works. He roams around with fellow industry workers in search of affection and love. Meanwhile, Parvathi takes care of her son well and he becomes a lecturer but he grows up with hatred towards his father. Incidentally, Prakash takes guidance from Professor Krishna Rao not being aware that the latter is his father. Prakash even falls for Shanthi who stays in Professor’s house and as time passes by, a great bonding of respect forms between Prakash and Krishna Rao.  The saddened parents Krishna Rao and Padmavathi become bedridden with Chitra’s death and with Shanti’s good words, Sekhar comes to the family’s rescue. He unites the family with great difficulty and the film ends happily when Krishna Rao and Padmavathi realize the greatness of Punyavathi- none other than his first wife Parvathi.

Performances:

Sobhan Babu is extremely good in the role of Sekhar. His role demands lot of emotions, shades and histrionics. It is not an easy task to act confidently on par with great senior artists like SVR, Sr.NTR and Bhanumathi but Sobhan Babu pulls it off with brilliant ease. SVR is earthly as the professor and a considerate family man. Bhanumathi is fantastic as the rash housewife who realizes her mistake later. Haranath is evil as the cheater and Jyothi Lakshmi gets a good role to perform.  Krishnakumari is adorable as the balanced woman Shanthi.  Pandaribai is adequate in the title role Punyavathi.

Technical Aspects:

The film is great on directional skills thanks to Dada Mirashi. Dialogues by D.V.Narasa Raju are crisply written with wonderful sensibilities. Music by Ghantasala is lifeline of the film and Dr.C.Narayana Reddy’s lyrics make the audience ponder over the issues.

Lava Kusa Movie Info

Lava Kusa 1963 story jn short

Lava Kusa is one greatest Telugu Mythological film which made people believe that if Lord Rama really came back to life, he would look like Sr.NTR. It would be incredible to know many of Sr.NTR fans used to keep his Lord Rama attire posters in worship rooms in their houses too. Though this film had initial breaks during its production phase, the film overcame all these obstacles and remains to be one of the most amazing classics of Telugu Cinema till date. The film is based on "Uttara Ramayana" which is the story of Lord Rama after he comes back from 14 years of exile and defeating Ravana to get back his wife Sita.

The whole kingdom of Ayodhya celebrates the return of Lord Rama (Sr.NTR), Sita (Anjali Devi) and Lakshmana(Kantha Rao) back after a victorious glory over Ravana and successful exile in the forest. Things go smoothly until Rama comes to know a washerman(Relangi) in the kingdom speaks ill of the justice system and casually makes a remark on Lord Rama about bringing back Sita despite her staying in Ravana’s abode for a long time. Caught in between justice and love for his family, Lord Rama outweighs justice. He decides to send Sita to forest on the word of the citizen of the kingdom. Sita, who is already pregnant by then gets devastated learning this news from Lakshmana in the forest and things take a serious turn. Sita is rescued by Poet Valmiki (Nagaiah) and gives birth to twins Lava and Kusa. The rest of the story is about whether the estranged family re unites and what happens to the future of Ayodhya

Performances:

Sr.NTR is amazing as Lord Rama in every respect. Right from the body language, appearance, histrionics, and different shades of performance- he did it all. His performance as the separated husband from the time he leaves Sita is really heart breaking to watch.  The monologues he delivers- speaking to himself about why he left Sita for the sake of Justice is thought provoking. Anjali Devi is brilliant as Sita and delivers her best in emotional scenes. Kantha Rao is perfect as Lakshmana, the loyal brother of Lord Rama. His performance when he had to leave Sita in the forest and in the song “Ye Nimishaniki” is worth mentioning.  Chittoor Nagaiah gives another classy performance as Poet Valmiki in this film. Prominent actors like Relangi, Girija, Suryakantham ,Ramana Reddy etc were adequate in their roles.

However it is the young kids Master Nagaraju and Master Subrahmanyam who played Lava and Kusa who earned high fame with this film. Their perfect diction, acting, performance in every frame speaks wonders in the film.

Tecchnical Aspects

Lava Kusa was the first film to be made in Geva Colour completely by then. During the black and white era due to financial limitations – producers used to make a special song in colour and rest of the film in Black and White. But this film was made in colour technology. Music by Ghantasala is the sure shot highlight for the film. Every poem, song and background music given is apt for the theme of it. Suseela and Leela sang for Lava and Kusa respectively with rigorous training from the composer himself- which speaks of the dedication those days.  The production values are classy and direction is more than perfect.

Bheeshma Movie Info

Bheeshma story in short

Though people say Karna is the most important character of the Hindu Epic Mahabharata, Bhishma is the heart and soul of the Epic. If he didn’t make the oath or remain unmarried,  the story of Pandavas and Kauravas would not have existed. Despite being a principled man, and a valiant fighter – Bhishma had to face some blames in the impression that he did certain things out of selfishness. Because of his loyalty he had to support Kauravas in the war. Director B.A.Subba Rao took this story and made it into a silver screen Epic starring Sr.NTR in the lead. This film is termed as one of the greatest hits for Sr.NTR and Anjali Devi acted in a pivotal role for it. She portrayed two different roles in the film. While the first was the beautiful Amba, the second role was totally contrasting as Sikhandi- which is a challenge feared by many leading female actresses.

Story Details:

The film deals with the life span of Bhishma (Sr.NTR) who promises Amba (Anjali Devi) that he would marry her but fails his word due to dramatic circumstances. As a result Amba holds grudge on Bhishma and plans to kill him in some way possible Amba is loved meanwhile by Salvaraju (Kantha Rao). She does a serious penance to Lord Shiva and earns his blessings. As a result, Amba the beautiful woman transforms to Sikhandi. She lives with grudge and hatred towards Bhishma throughout the life and in the mean time Bhishma feels guilty for breaking his promise. He decides to give up battles and weapons and is forced to support Kauravas out of loyalty in the Kurukshetra war.  After living a life of struggle, misunderstandings and troubles Bhishma dies in the hands of Arjuna during the war.

Performances:

Sr.NTR is excellent in the title role of Bhishma. While he performed his best in the role, however it was Anjali Devi who steals the show with contrasting portrayal of Amba and Sikhandi. It is indeed a difficult path to take for a beautiful actress of her sort and she does it with excellent ease. Kantha Rao is decent as Salvaraju, the lover of Amba. Haranath is adequate as Lord Krishna in the film.

Technical Aspects:

The story is adapted in such a way that the film looks entertaining at the same time instructive. Dialogues by prominent Telugu writer Taapi Dharma Rao and Arudra work wonders. Music by S.Rajeshwara Rao became huge hit with songs like Manasu Leni Korika sung by P.Suseela and P.B.Srinivas was greatly shot featuring Anjali Devi and Kantha Rao. Maha Deva Shambo was shot on Anjali Devi as Amba who does penance for Lord Shiva.Hailesso Hailessa sung by Jamuna Rani, Madhava O deva sung by P.Suseela became highly popular. Seetharama Kalyanam Movie Info

Seetharama Kalyanam story in short ::

Seetharama Kalyanam can be undoubtedly termed as one of the career defining films for Sr.NTR. It is interesting to see B.Saroja act equally good along with him in an epic film of this sort. It is extremely good to watch Sr.NTR adorn the challenging role of Ravana. It is even more good to watch B.Saroja, a beautiful and talented actress as his wife Mandodari in the film. Sr.NTR also wrote the script and directed this film. He planned the characterizations so perfectly that he included a song for Mandodari (Paadave Ragamayi Veena) exclusively. In fact, K.V. Reddy was initially considered to direct the film. He wanted SVR to play Ravana and Sr.NTR as Lord Rama. But Sr.NTR’s idea changed suddenly and despite the title being Seetharama Kalyanam, he wanted to adorn the role of Ravana and highlight his character. This wasn’t appreciated by K.V.Reddy and he advised Sr.NTR not to play a negative role. But when Sr.NTR insisted that he would play the role of Raavana, K.V.Reddy went off the project.  As a result, Sr.NTR took the directional responsibilities and selected Haranath for the role of Lord Rama. A new girl named Mani was chosen for the role of Seetha. She later rose to prominence as veteran actress Geethanjali. As the character of Ravana was strong in this script, they had to make Mandodari important and glamorous as well. With B.Saroja devi gracing the role, the character got a completeness.

Story Details:

Ravana (Sr.NTR) is stopped by Nandi when he goes straight to Kailasa to get darshan of Lord Shiva. A rift happens between Ravana and Nandi and the latter curses Ravana saying he would die in the hands of “Vaanaras”. Ravana doesn’t bother the curse and does a severe penance to shake the foundations of Kailasa. Lord Shiva feels delighted with the penance and grants Ravana few wishes to be fulfilled. As a result, Ravana becomes invincible. With the penance of sages and divine people, Lakshmi Devi(Mani/Geethanjali) is born on Planet Earth as Vedavathi who sacrifices her body to Ravana. Ravana lusts for her and tries to capture her. She immediately gets reborn in Lanka and says that she would destroy him – thereby turning into ashes. On the word of Mandodari (B.Saroja), the Rakshasas collect the ashes into a box and bury it in Janaka(Mikkilineni)’s kingdom. Janaka in the meantime performs puja for children and while tilling the ground, a baby girl in a box is found. He names her Seetha and looks after her with affection and care. On the other side in Ayodhya, Dasaradha (Nagaiah) is blessed with four sons who are the reincarnations of Narayana, Adhi Sesha, Shanka and Chakra as  Rama(Haranath), Lakshmana (Adhi Sesha), Bharata and Shatragnya. Rama and Laksmana go as a security for Vishwamitra (Gummadi)’s yaaga ritual. After it is finished, they go to Janaka Kingdom for the Swayamvara of Seetha. Ravana also arrives for the swayamvara in order to break the Shiva’s Bow- which is the condition to marry Seetha. But he fails to do so and gets insulted. Rama breaks the Shiva’s Bow and when Parasurama (K.V.S.Sharma) challenges the abilities of the former, the latter realizes the value of Rama and his reincarnation. The film ends with the phenomenal wedding of Seetha-Rama.

Performances:

Sr.NTR is fantastic as Ravana- a staunch Lord Shiva Devotee, a music lover, a greedy personality. He shares an interesting chemistry with his co-star B.Saroja. She does a brilliant job as Mandodari, the sane wife of an eccentric personality. Her innocent presence is a treat for the film. Haranath is handsome and perfect for the role of Lord Rama. Geethanjali is beautiful and youthful as the young Seetha- oozing out innocence and sweetness. She delivers very little dialogues in the film and yet makes an impact. Haranath and Geethanjali look like million bucks in the eternal wedding song of Telugu Cinema-‘Sri Seetharamula Kalyanam Chootamu Raarandi’.

Technical Aspects:

Samudrala Senior gave a new dimension to the Epic Ramayana by highlighting the Ravana’s point of view. The dialogues are crisp and high in literary value. Music is another asset for this epic and songs like ‘Kaanarara Kailasa Nivasa’,’Jayatvadabra Vibhramadbhama’ (Shiva Taandava Stotram written by Ravana himself),’ Govinda Damodara’,’Paadave Raagamayi’,’Sarasala Javaralanu’,’ O Sukumara Ninu Gani’ became evergreen hits. Sr.NTR does a great job as director as well and the film has good production values.

Panduranga Mahatyam can be termed as one of the top notch devotional based musical films which ever graced Telugu Cinema. Before she is all set to enter the in laws house, Pundarikudu goes to a beautiful prostitute Kalavathi (B.saroja). Even after his wife’s arrival in the house, Pundarikudu continues his illicit relationship with Kalavathi. To make things worse, he even gives his wife’s jewelry to this prostitute. Meanwhile, the cruel prostitute takes all the jewelry and kicks Pundarikudu out of her house. Pundarikudu realizes his mistake and feels ashamed to face his parents. He leaves to an ashram eventually. He faces hurdles and insults there and because of his enemies he loses his legs. As an orphan and a limp man, Pundarikudu yearns to meet his parents. Missamma Movie Info

Missamma story in short

Missamma remains to be one of the greatest Social Drama films ever in Telugu Cinema for the perfection it offers. Based on Bengali Literary work Manmoyee Girls School by Yotish Benarjee, Acting, Music, and rock steady direction are some of the greatest aspects of this film.

Details of Story :

The story is based on two main protagonists of the film Sr.NTR, and Mary (Savitri), their economic struggles and how they make people believe they are really husband and wife and the metamorphosis of their relationship. Personalities wise, both of them are extreme opposites. While Sr.NTR’s character is laid back and fun loving, Mary is a staunch Christian and is a no- nonsense person.  The rest of the story is about how these two get along, and the sweet little troubles they face as it progresses by.

Performances:

Sr.NTR is amazingly handsome and perfect in performance as the fun loving hero. His histrionics and those little tantrums he tries on Mary were brilliantly done. He looks breathtaking in the songs, with great looks along with fantastic acting skills. Savitri is fantastic as the no- nonsense strict lady Mary. Her facial expressions speak millions of words even without uttering a single dialogue. This one film is enough to say why Savitri is called as one of the greatest actresses Telugu Cinema has ever seen.Veteran actresss Bhanumathi was initially casted as the female lead in the film but due to some differences with Chakrapani, the golden chance greeted Savitri. ANR is seen in a comedy detective role, which was quite challenging for him because just then he played the pathos lover role in Devadas. Veteran actors like Jamuna, SVR, Suryakantham also are present in the film which gave it a picture perfect look.

Technical Aspects:

Dialogues by Chakrapani are brilliant in its own accord. They are crystal clear, which would hit the audience straight. Pingali Nagendra Rao’s lyrics for the songs are another highlight of the film. Music by S.Rajeshwara Rao wonderfully adds to this lyrical brilliance. No Telugu person can forget the songs like Raavoyi Chandamama, Telusukonave Yuvathi and Aaduvari Maatalaku ever.  Direction by L.V. Prasad is wonderful and gives the film a great entertaining momentum.

Sri Krishna Pandaveeyam Movie Info

Sri Krishna Pandaveeyam story in short ::

Sri Krishna Pandaveeyam is one of those rare classics where Sr.NTR was shown in contrasting roles such as Lord Krishna (Positive Role) and Duryodhana (Negative Role). Rudraveena movie info

Rudraveena story in short

Rudraveena was a thought provoking classic which came at a juncture when Chiranjeevi was heaped with stardom and commercial value- at the same time he was earning great name as an actor with films like Swayam Krushi and Subhalekha.  In fact, he worked with director Balachander during his upcoming days in mostly negative characters but the duo shared a special rapport right from then. Rudraveena is special because it came from Chiranjeevi’s home production and showcased him sans star image- and a musician with responsibility for society and human values. The film touches many spheres of life such as- Classical Music, Casteism, Dance, Humanity. It mainly questions which is more important- whether enthralling art or a attending a dying person!

Details of story :

Rudraveena is a story of Suryam (Chiranjeevi) and his journey in life. Born in an orthodox Brahmin family, his father Bilahari Ganapathi Sastry (Gemini Ganesan) is a very strict person and a music guru to Suryam. While Suryam’s elder brother is a nadaswaram player- married to a considerate lady, Suryam learns singing from his father.  The only problem Suryam has is that- he cannot tolerate injustice or suffering around him.  He gets differences in this regard with his father because- Ganapathi Sastry is somebody who strictly believes Art is divine form and nothing should enter mind while performing it.  Balachander shows this in just one song Tarali Raada- where Suryam sings the song in lighter vein by changing the notes of a carnatic raagam Hamsadhwani- suiting the likes of common workers. Things take a serious turn when Suryam loves Lalitha (Shobhana) a classical dancer of Harijan origin. The situations come in such a way that Suryam questions his father’s way of life and says he would want to transform the sufferings of the village. The father- son rift increases and the rest of the film is about whether Suryam would succeed in transforming the village- and gaining his father’s appreciation.

Performances:

Chiranjeevi is phenomenal as the lead role Suryam- who is a person of multiple shades. He excels in the role of classical singer with agony in heart- about the sufferings of people. He looks extremely believable as the character that people wouldn’t get reminded of the star Chiranjeevi at all! Shobhana is excellent as the love interest of Suryam and a classical dancer. Her role is brilliantly crafted- where a female lead is not just for songs and glamour; but has an important role in the story. Gemini Ganeshan is at his usual best as the staunch classical singer and a believer of caste and tradition. Devilalitha, Ramesh Arvind, Satyanarayana, Brahmanandam etc played some important roles in the film as well.

Technical Aspects:

K.Balachander is the undisputable reason for the brilliance of the film. Every character is so perfectly crafted that we don’t think again about their credibility. It was a challenge for him to show Chiranjeevi as the considerate individual role- after showing him in extreme negative characterizations in the previous films. Every frame makes the audience think about world- not just in the entertainment factor. Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s music is another strong foundation for the film to be so artistically strong. Songs like Tarali Raada, Lalitha Priya Kamalam, Nammaku Nammaku, Cheppalani Undhi became all time hits. Ilaiyaraaja won the national award for best music in Telugu for this film. Sirivennela Sitarama Sastry wrote all the songs and one cannot forget the song “Randi Randi”  - which became the anthem for every household in AP- to welcome their guests! The film is rich in production values and was shot in exotic locations –suiting the mood of it.
